Former President Donald Trump has been discharged from the hospital after surviving an assassination attempt during a rally in Pennsylvania. The incident occurred on Saturday when shots were fired, grazing Trump’s ear, prompting the Secret Service to rush him off stage. The FBI identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old Pennsylvania resident, who was subsequently killed by law enforcement.
The shooting led to the death of one attendee, with two others critically injured, according to NBC News. Footage from the event showed Trump clutching his ear and dropping to the ground, with apparent blood visible on the right side of his head. Secret Service agents quickly surrounded him and escorted him to safety.
President Joe Biden condemned the attack in a statement, saying, “There’s no place in America for this kind of violence.” Originally scheduled to spend the weekend in Delaware, Biden returned to Washington following the incident.
Global leaders expressed their shock and sent well wishes to Trump via social media platform X. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the violence, French President Emmanuel Macron called it “a tragedy for our democracies,” and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau emphasized that political violence is never acceptable. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida urged the world to stand firm against violence that challenges democracy.
Thomas Matthew Crooks, the identified shooter, was from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, approximately 55 miles south of Butler, where the rally was held. Although Crooks was a registered Republican, records indicate his sole political donation was $15 to Act Blue, a Democratic support group, in 2021. Crooks fired several shots from a rooftop overlooking the rally site and was not carrying identification, leading to a lengthy process for investigators to confirm his identity.
