Ravens Tight End Mark Andrews Provides Aid in In-Flight Medical Emergency
On Thursday, Ravens tight end Mark Andrews transitioned from his on-the-field heroics to an off-the-field rescue during a Southwest Airlines flight to Phoenix. The Baltimore star witnessed a fellow passenger experiencing a medical emergency characterized by difficulty breathing and low blood pressure, as reported by Andrew Springs, another passenger on the flight.
Andrews, who is a Type 1 diabetic, took decisive action by approaching a doctor and nurse attending to the distressed passenger. He suggested that the woman might be dealing with a blood sugar issue and generously offered the use of his diabetic testing kit. Following a finger prick test and the intake of orange juice, the woman's heart rate stabilized, and she was able to disembark the plane upon landing.
Confirming the incident, Andrews released a statement through the Baltimore Ravens, acknowledging the quick response of the flight attendants and expressing gratitude to the nurse and doctor on board. He stated, "In addition to the fast-acting flight attendants, the real heroes are the nurse and doctor who also happened to be on the plane. Thankfully, they were able to provide the woman the quick assistance she needed."
Andrew Springs, who initially shared the story on social media, praised Andrews' actions in an interview with ESPN. "It was scary. It was touch and go there for a while. And I think the coolest part is, if anybody who's ever watched Mark Andrews, they knew exactly what was going to happen. It was just very classic Mark Andrews where it's like, in times of need, people like that step up."
Andrews, a three-time Pro Bowler with six seasons under the Ravens, has an impressive career record of 381 receptions for 4,857 yards and 40 touchdowns. Despite his own challenges, having recently ended a season due to injury, Andrews demonstrated true heroism by stepping up in a critical moment during the flight.
