It seems Spotify is gearing up to launch a new subscription add-on called "Music Pro," according to reports. This add-on is rumored to include features like "DJ remix features" and upgraded audio quality.
The speculation around Music Pro surfaced in a report by The Verge, which referenced findings from Redditor Hypixely who discovered new Spotify code. For users eagerly anticipating enhanced audio on Spotify, it's been almost three years since some users first spotted a HiFi icon on the platform. This isn't the first time that code has hinted at improvements in listening experience.
In a nutshell, initial speculation about a HiFi addition on Spotify evolved into rumors of a more comprehensive "Supremium" tier. Last September, reports based on Spotify code suggested that Supremium wouldn't just offer HiFi audio, but also include advanced mixing tools, expanded access to audiobooks, and other features, all for a monthly fee of $19.99 for individuals in the United States.
As April 2024 approached, new reports emerged suggesting that Spotify was considering price hikes of $1 for individual plans and $2 for family plans in several countries, specifically for tiers equipped with audiobooks. Subscribers would also have the choice to maintain access to music and podcasts at their current rates, without access to audiobooks. Previously, paid plans in the U.S. included 15 monthly hours of audiobook access.
As the rumored Supremium package, expected to cost $19.99 monthly and prominently feature audiobooks, faced uncertainties due to potential price increases, reports from The Verge suggested that lossless audio, along with "DJ remix features," would be offered as part of the Music Pro add-on.
While "lossless" often refers to super-HD audio, the Spotify code indicated a specific definition of 24-bit, 44.1 kHz listening for Music Pro, according to the original Reddit post. This add-on would allow users to append Music Pro to their subscriptions, resembling the previously anticipated HiFi rather than the standalone Supremium package.
At the time of reporting, Spotify had not publicly commented on Music Pro, and its potential pricing remained unclear. However, with Spotify's focus on profitability, the move towards HD audio appears logical.
In essence, frustrated audiophiles who may have switched to alternative services like Apple Music, Amazon Music, Tidal, or Qobuz in search of better audio quality may now reconsider joining Spotify for Music Pro. Additionally, existing Spotify users who have long desired improved audio quality might be willing to pay for this added benefit.
