Panthers lament disallowed goal against Oilers in Game 6 of Stanley Cup Final
EDMONTON, Alberta The Florida Panthers faced a crucial turning point in their 5-1 Game 6 Stanley Cup Final loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Friday night, as an offside video review nullified a second-period goal by Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov.
Barkov seemed to score just 10 seconds after Edmonton's Adam Henrique had extended the Oilers' lead to 2-0, 46 seconds into the second period. However, the Oilers' bench quickly challenged the goal, claiming the Panthers were offside. Upon reviewing the footage, officials concluded that Florida's Sam Reinhart "preceded the puck into the offensive zone and was in an offside position prior to the Panthers' goal," thus disallowing Barkov's goal and maintaining Edmonton's 2-0 lead.
This ruling was pivotal, stopping Florida from gaining any momentum. Panthers coach Paul Maurice commented, "You're looking for a jump-start at that point. The shots are 11-2 in the first period, so we need something to go. It would've been a spark for us for sure."
Edmonton capitalized further by scoring a third goal with 1:40 left in the period. A blocked one-timer attempt by Florida defenseman Gustav Forsling allowed Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to gain control and send the puck to center ice, where winger Zach Hyman seized the opportunity and scored his 16th goal of the playoffs.
Reflecting on the game's critical moments, Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch said, "You think about the game, and there are a couple of opportunities for momentum shifts. One was in the second period when they scored on the offside play, making it 2-1 instead of 2-0. That could have changed the flow of the game."
With this victory, the Oilers became only the third team in NHL history to force a Game 7 after being down 3-0 in the Stanley Cup Final.

After the game, Panthers players expressed their disappointment over the disallowed goal. Florida winger Carter Verhaeghe remarked, "It sucks that it didn't go our way. I don't know. I'm sure it was the right call if they're watching a million replays."
Barkov added, "Well, it was offside, so it doesn't count. We had our chances after that. We had our chances to get to one goal, but then they got 3-0."
