Hellfest 2024 reveals The Guardian of Darkness, a fire-breathing mechanical scorpion-woman.

Two years after debuting their massive 15-meter Lemmy sculpture, the French rock and metal festival Hellfest has unveiled another stunning installation: La Gardienne des Ténèbres (The Guardian of Darkness).

Located in the Kingdom of Muscadet area at the Hellfest site in Clisson, France, this 10-meter-tall mechanical creation is a blend of a scorpion and a devil woman. The Guardian of Darkness can move its face and entire body, including its scorpion tail and eight legs, and it breathes fire, water, and steam from its mouth. This extraordinary installation was designed by François Delarozière of the Nantes-based production company La Machine.

Describing La Gardienne des Ténèbres, La Machine's website states: "Made of wood and steel, she moves on eight legs with a gait that is part crab, part spider. All her limbs are articulated. Her head and chest swivel, tilt, and swing side to side and up and down. Her mouth and stinger emit fire, various forms of water, and smoke. She can bite. Her eyes, eyelids, and tongue enhance her expressiveness. Her prehensile hands allow her to grasp various objects. She can walk, run, rear up, lie down to the height of the public, or slip under urban furniture such as bridges or tram lines. Numerous scars, scarifications, and esoteric symbols mark her body, reflecting a rich and eventful past life. Her steel skeleton is powered by numerous hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders and automated electric motors. A load-bearing chassis ensures her steering, propulsion, and lifting. An onboard sound system allows music to be played and the screams and yelps of the Guardian to be heard."
