Hugh Jackman's
portrayal of Wolverine is among the most iconic in superhero film history. From
his debut in the 2000 X-Men movie to his emotional farewell in 2017's Logan,
Jackman embodied the character until he decided to retire. However, he has been
persuaded to reprise his role in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine, joining
Ryan Reynolds' Merc with a Mouth. Surprisingly, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige
initially had reservations about Jackman's return.
While the
prospect of Jackman joining the third Deadpool movie—also the first within the
Marvel Cinematic Universe—generated excitement, Feige expressed his concerns.
In an interview with Empire, Feige recounted telling Jackman, "Let me give
you a piece of advice, Hugh. Don’t come back." Feige believed that Logan
provided a perfect and fitting end to Jackman's Wolverine, one that shouldn't
be undone. Logan was a satisfying conclusion to nearly two decades of Jackman's
portrayal, highly praised by fans and critics alike.
Crafting the
perfect farewell in superhero films is challenging, especially as characters
often return from the dead in comics, making death scenes less impactful. Feige
feared that bringing Jackman back could diminish both Wolverine’s final scene
in Logan and future character deaths in the MCU, making it harder to bid
farewell to Jackman's Wolverine again.
Jackman carefully
considered his decision. In the same Empire interview, he described taking a
long drive to clear his mind before ultimately deciding, "I drove for
another hour. Couldn’t stop thinking about it. And I got out of the car, called
Ryan, and said, ‘Ryan, if you’ll have me, I’m in.’"

Jackman's return
has generated great anticipation for Deadpool & Wolverine, promising a
reunion with Reynolds' character. This time, they aim for a better showing than
their previous team-up in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. To preserve the integrity
of Wolverine’s farewell in Logan, Deadpool & Wolverine will utilize the
multiverse concept, ensuring that this isn’t the same Logan from the previous
X-Men films. This approach seeks to maintain Logan's ending while allowing
Jackman to bring new energy to the character. Time will tell if Feige’s
concerns were justified.
