Significant Music Changes: Brett Mitchell is named new music director by Pasadena Symphony
Acclaimed for his deftly executed performances, Brett Mitchell is well-known for his love of contemporary popular music as well as his fervent support of classical music.
Last month, Kimberly Winick, President of the Pasadena Symphony board, announced the appointment of acclaimed music conductor Brett Mitchell as the symphony’s newest music director. Mitchell's five-year tenure commenced on April 1, with his inaugural performance scheduled for the orchestra’s opening season concert on Oct. 26. Reflecting on the selection process, Pasadena Symphony CEO Andrew Brown shared insights into his collaboration with Mitchell and the extensive efforts that led to his appointment.
"I joined the symphony in November of last year, and I must commend my predecessors for their exhaustive two-year search for a new music director," Brown stated. "Brett emerged as the choice from a select group of candidates, consistently impressing with his creativity, pragmatism, and wealth of innovative ideas. Our collaboration has already begun, and Brett demonstrates a profound understanding of our symphony's distinctiveness and the cultural richness we bring to Pasadena."
Renowned for his meticulously crafted performances, Brett Mitchell is celebrated as a fervent advocate for classical music, while also displaying a deep affection for contemporary genres. His collaborations with esteemed soloists such as Renée Fleming, Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and many others underscore his versatility and artistic prowess. Mitchell's extensive conducting career has seen him grace prestigious stages worldwide, including appearances with renowned orchestras like the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the Minnesota Orchestra, among others. Notably, he embarked on a notable tour with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
Expressing his enthusiasm for his new role, Mitchell conveyed, "I've held various positions within the music industry, but this opportunity marks a distinct journey of its own. I feel incredibly privileged to collaborate with the esteemed musicians of the Pasadena Symphony. My initial meeting with Andy last autumn, shortly after he assumed his role, was remarkably congenial. Building connections with remarkable individuals like him enriches the job experience and makes it all the more enjoyable. As my family anticipates the arrival of a baby girl, I am thrilled to embark on these dual adventures."
In his capacity as the symphony's new music director, Mitchell will spearhead the artistic direction, complemented by Andrew Brown's administrative leadership. With the upcoming fall season on the horizon, Mitchell is poised to curate a compelling program, with details to be unveiled later this year.
Having been on the radar of the Pasadena Symphony for several years, Brett Mitchell previously held the title of artistic partner for the orchestra's 2021-22 season. Following his impressive debut, he was invited back as an artistic partner for the 2023-24 season, where he led the opening concerts last autumn.
Kimberly Winick expressed her excitement about Mitchell's appointment, stating, "Brett Mitchell emerged as the standout candidate from our rigorous music director search, and I am thrilled to welcome him as our new artistic leader. In addition to his role with the Pasadena Symphony, Mitchell will continue to serve as the artistic director and conductor of Oregon's Sunriver Music Festival, a position he assumed in 2022. Prior to this, he served as the music director of the Colorado Symphony in Denver from 2017 to 2021, following a successful tenure with The Cleveland Orchestra, where he ascended from assistant conductor to associate conductor. Mitchell's earlier career also includes a role as assistant conductor with the Houston Symphony.
The Pasadena Symphony, founded in 1982 by conductor Reginald Bland, boasts a rich history. Mitchell will become only the sixth conductor to hold the title of music director. Initially named the Pasadena Civic Orchestra, the ensemble primarily comprised volunteers in its early days. Today, the Pasadena Symphony is renowned for delivering high-quality musical performances, ranging from orchestral concerts to acclaimed artists' recitals. Furthermore, the symphony is dedicated to providing extensive access to youth education programs and fostering performing arts through digital innovation and community outreach efforts.
