Knights caution Hetherington against developing negative habits.

The Newcastle Knights have spoken with Jack Hetherington, but he has not been disciplined by the club.

Newcastle football boss Peter Parr has criticized Jack Hetherington for reverting to past behavior by confronting Reed Mahoney, cautioning the Knights enforcer that he "must improve".

However, the Knights have decided not to impose further punishment on Hetherington for his unusual behavior during round seven. They are content that the prop has shown "high contrition" despite his one-game NRL suspension.

Hetherington and Mahoney were both sin-binned in the final moments of Canterbury's 36-12 NRL victory on Sunday following a scuffle between the teams.

Tensions rose as Hetherington awaited Mahoney in the tunnel, exhibiting boxing-like movements and suggesting he was prepared to engage in physical confrontation.

Hetherington then proceeded to push Mahoney in the chest before nearby NRL officials intervened to separate them.

Parr and Knights coach Adam O'Brien have both addressed the incident with Hetherington, who has faced significant media scrutiny this week.

"The reality is he should have gone straight to the dressing room and not engaged," Parr stated. "He needs to show better judgment. I've had a productive conversation with him, as has the coach. We expect that behavior not to be repeated."

Hetherington's disciplinary issues were a concern earlier in his career, with eight charges from the match review committee in his first 40 NRL games. However, since joining the Knights last year, the 27-year-old has largely improved his conduct and became a key member of their middle rotation during the recent semi-finals.

The grade-two contrary conduct charge Hetherington received on Monday was his first citation by the match review committee since joining the Knights.

"His discipline has notably improved, so this was a step back for him. We need to ensure it doesn't happen again," Parr remarked.

However, Parr believes that Hetherington has learned from the incident and does not require additional punishment from the club.

"At this moment, we haven't decided to sanction him," Parr stated. "His remorse is evident. He's faced significant public and media scrutiny, and the NRL has already sanctioned him. While we're displeased with his actions after being sin-binned, inflicting further punishment wouldn't serve much purpose at this stage."

Parr's comments come as Kalyn Ponga faces up to 12 weeks on the sidelines due to the Lisfranc injury he sustained against the Bulldogs.
