Upon the release of Future and Metro Boomin's collaborative album "We Don't Trust You" last month, listeners swiftly gravitated towards Kendrick Lamar's guest verse on "Like That." In this track, Lamar took aim at Drake and J. Cole, who had previously grouped him as part of the "big three" in their joint song "First Person Shooter," unveiled last year.
Drake has made vague allusions to Lamar's diss during his ongoing tour, while J. Cole opted for a more direct approach. With the surprise drop of his latest project "Might Delete Later," Cole addressed Lamar's criticism head-on in the closing track "7 Minute Drill."
In his response track, the Fayetteville, NC native wastes no time addressing Lamar's diss. "I got a phone call, they say that somebody dissing / You want some attention, it come with extensions," he raps, setting the tone for his rebuttal. "He still doing shows but fell off like ‘The Simpsons’ / Your first shit was classic, your last shit was tragic / Your second shit put n—s to sleep but they gassed it / Your third shit was massive and that was your prime / I was trailing right behind and I just now hit mine."

He further delves into Lamar's sporadic release pattern, referencing Lamar's "The Heart" series, which the latter has unveiled gradually throughout his career. "He averaging one ‘Heart’ verse like every 30 months or something," J. Cole remarks, highlighting the infrequency of Lamar's contributions. "If he wasn’t dissing, then we wouldn’t be discussing nothin’ / Blood don’t make me have to smoke this n—a ’cause I fuck with him / But push come to shove on this mic I will humble him."
The anticipation for a response from both rappers escalated after Lamar's appearance on "Like That." Initially, Lamar took issue with J. Cole's lyrics that placed them in the same echelon of success. In response, Lamar fired back with a pointed retort, expressing disdain for being categorized alongside others: “Yeah get up with me, fuck sneak dissing / ‘First Person Shooter,’ I hope they came with three switches,” he sneered. “Motherfuck the big three, n—a, it’s just big me.”

While tension persists, J. Cole treated fans to a 12-track offering on "Might Delete Later." The project features guest appearances from Ari Lennox, Gucci Mane, Bas, Central Cee, and Cam’Ron. His latest release follows his sixth solo album, "The Off-Season," which debuted in 2021.
