Two days after his visit with King Charles in London, the prince astonished Pittsburgh Steeler Cameron Heyward by bestowing upon him the prestigious award.
Two days following Prince Harry's brief 24-hour journey to London to visit his father, King Charles III, after a cancer diagnosis, he swiftly resumed his schedule by attending the NFL Honors awards in Las Vegas. On the televised event, he had the honor of presenting the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award to Cameron Heyward, a defensive tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Beginning his speech with a lighthearted jab at rugby, the sport invented by the English and later transformed into American football, he humorously remarked, "I truly admire how you borrowed rugby from us and molded it into your own game. Rather than passing the ball backwards, why not pass it forwards? Adding pads and helmets? Certainly. Introducing offense and defense—now that's logical. Taking breaks every 15 seconds? And why settle for a 10-month season when you can condense it into 18 weeks? Brilliant."
From 2016 to 2021, Harry held the position of president at England’s Rugby Football Union, where he frequently attended prominent gatherings and presented championship trophies for the sport. Upon relinquishing his role as a working royal, the responsibility was transferred to Kate Middleton, who shares his enthusiasm for rugby. However, Harry hinted at a shift in his sporting affiliations when he was spotted at the 2022 Super Bowl alongside his cousin, Princess Eugenie, in a suite provided by Salesforce.
When it came time to present the award to Heyward, Harry adopted a more solemn demeanor. “Setting aside the jest, your contributions both on and off the field are genuinely commendable,” Prince Harry remarked. “You serve as role models for countless individuals through your actions and philanthropy. Subsequently, Heyward joined him onstage, where they shared an embrace, joined by the evening’s host, Keegan-Michael Key. Heyward expressed his astonishment at the identity of his award presenter, exclaiming, “Wow, it's Prince Harry. I'm truly stunned.” Following the ceremony, Harry and Heyward posed for a photograph, with Heyward holding the Walter Payton statue.
