US President Joe Biden withdrew from the 2024 White House race on Sunday after mounting calls from high-level Democrats for the octogenarian leader to make way for a new nominee. Biden’s decision follows a series of recent gaffes that raised concerns about his ability to compete against Donald Trump in the November election.
In a statement on X, Biden said, "It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term."
Biden will continue to serve as president and commander-in-chief until his term ends in January 2025. He plans to address the nation this week.
The first in-person showdown of the 2024 campaign between Biden and Trump initially seemed to favor the incumbent but ultimately marked the beginning of the end for Biden’s reelection hopes, leading to a dramatic period in US presidential campaign history.
Days before the June 27 presidential debate, both candidates agreed on parameters designed to avoid the pitfalls of the 2020 debates, including muted microphones except during a candidate’s turn to speak. Trump’s supporters criticized these rules, calling for more spontaneous interactions.
Biden’s faltering performance during the debate, with the 81-year-old sometimes freezing mid-sentence, sparked a debate about his mental faculties. The media quickly picked up on the story, with liberal outlets highlighting his “unsteady performance” and conservative media, such as the National Review, accusing Biden of being “selfish” and increasing the likelihood of a Trump victory.
An ABC interview a week after the debate did little to reassure voters, according to Thomas Gift, director of the Centre on US Politics at University College London.
The much-anticipated press conference in Washington, D.C., amid reports of a survey testing how Vice President Kamala Harris would fare as the top Democrat candidate, saw Biden asked if he had concerns over Harris’s ability to beat Trump.

"Look, I wouldn't have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president if she was not qualified to be president. So start there," replied Biden. This statement marked the beginning of serious soul-searching within the Democratic ranks as momentum shifted in Trump’s favor following a July 13 assassination attempt that saw the 78-year-old Republican candidate emerge in fighting form.
Biden, known for his history of gaffes, faced growing difficulty as his decline became more visible. The US president tested positive for COVID-19 just as Trump’s vice-presidential pick, JD Vance, 39, energized the base at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. With polls showing a majority of Democrats believing Vice President Harris would make a good president, it was time for a wake-up call.
This realization came late in the campaign season, with the Democratic National Convention scheduled for August 19-22 in Chicago. However, the 2024 campaign has been full of surprises, and as the saying goes, a week is a long time in politics.
