The narrative centers around the red-headed outlaw Lilith, who leads a motley crew of unlikely heroes on a quest to find a missing girl whose destiny could alter the course of the universe.
Director Eli Roth emphasized the importance of making decisive choices regarding character selection for the film adaptation. Given that the movie exists outside the canon of the video game series, the creative team had the freedom to cherry-pick from the diverse array of characters spanning the franchise, including those introduced in later games.
The star-studded cast features Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Jack Black lending his voice to Claptrap, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, Kevin Hart as Roland, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, and Gina Gershon as Moxxi. "I was like, ‘Find me the weirdest, gnarliest people. We'll put them in the movie.’ And everybody, they loved it,” Roth said.
Roth and Pitchford shared insights into the process of convincing these actors to sign on to the project. Naturally, the question arose: What prompted someone like Blanchett to join the venture? The answer, surprisingly, is quite heartwarming.
During our discussion, Roth likened Blanchett to one of the greatest female performers in history. Their collaboration dates back to Roth's 2018 fantasy film, The House with a Clock in Its Walls, where Blanchett starred alongside Black. With this shared history, there was no hesitation in Roth's mind when considering Blanchett for the lead role in the Borderlands cast.
“I think with me, she has permission to go a little bit weird and a little bit insane because it's like, ‘Well, it's Eli,’” Roth remarked. “It's just like, ‘Let's go have fun.’ But she's obviously very serious about her character."

For Curtis, the decision to join the cast was largely influenced by her gamer daughter, who is an avid fan of the Borderlands franchise. As Pitchford recalled, her daughter insisted, “‘Mom, you have to do this movie.’”
In Black’s case, his connection to the project runs even deeper. In 2012, he attended E3 with his son during the teaser phase of Borderlands 2. Curious about the game, Black requested a demo from Pitchford, who jokingly mentioned that he would have to voice Claptrap if a film adaptation ever materialized. Without hesitation, the Nacho Libre star eagerly agreed.
“Whether you've played a Borderlands game or not, it's a fun movie. It's a really, really fun movie,” Pitchford emphasized.
Borderlands is set to hit U.S. theaters on August 9, 2024, distributed by Lionsgate.
